Prest was at
one time thought to have written Varney the
Vampire,
which is now seen to be the work of J.M. Rymer. However, he wrote
a great deal of melodrama and many Gothic tales, and with
The String of
Pearls (1841)
created the story of Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber.
