Emile
Erckmann (b.1822 d.1899), and Alexandre Chatrian (b.1826 d.1890)
collaborated in writing after they met as students in 1847.
Erckmann would compose the original draft in Alsace, while
Chatrian tidied it up in Paris, and oversaw publication. When
their partnership ended in 1889 Chatrian claimed all the credit,
leading to a law suit.
