  CHARLES DICKENS
b.1812 d.1870
An acclaimed and prolific author, Dickens' position as one of the 'greats' of English literature is beyond dispute. There are supernatural and macabre elements in all of the works of Dickens.

Short Stories
(often self-contained in novels)
The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, edited by 'Boz', Chapman & Hall (London), April 1836-Nov 1837 (20 monthly parts in 19)
Includes: "The Bagman's Story", "The Story of the Bagman's Uncle", "The True Legend of Prince Bladud", The Lawyer and the Ghost", "The Queer Chair", "The Ghosts of the Mail", "A Madman's Manuscript", "The Story of the Goblins Who Stole a Sexton".

The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, Chapman & Hall (London), April 1838-October 1839 (20 monthly parts in 19)
Including: Baron Koëldwethout's Apparition".

Master Humphrey's Clock, Chapman & Hall (London), April 1840-Nov 1841 (by 'Boz', 88 weekly parts, illustrated by G. Cattermole, Phiz & Daniel Maclise)
Includes two sections which are supernatural and have been reprinted seperately: "The Mother's Eyes", "A Confession found in a Prison at the Time of Charles the Second".

The Haunted Man and The Ghost's Bargain, Bradbury & Evans (London), 1848

To Be Read at Dusk, [London], 1852

The Uncommercial Traveller, Chapman & Hall (London), 1861
Includes two supernatural sections: "Nurse's Stories", which has been reprinted as "Captain Murderer and the Devil's Bargain", and "Chambers", which has been reprinted as "Mr Testator's Visitation".

The Complete Ghost Stories of Charles Dickens, Michael Joseph (London), 1982. Edited by Peter Haining.
This colection is not actually 'Complete' because it misses Dickens' novella 'The Chimes', and 'Four Ghost Stories' has since been discovered by Richard Dalby to have actually been penned by Amelia Edwards.
Includes: Introduction, Captain Murderer and the Devil's Bargain, The Lawyer and the Ghost, The Queer Chair, The Ghosts of the Mail, A Madman's Manuscript, The Story of the Goblins who Stole a Sexton, Baron Koeldwethout's Apparition, A Christmas Carol, The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain, A Child's Dream of a Star, Christmas Ghosts, To be Read at Dusk, The Ghost Chamber, The Haunted House, Mr Testator's Visitation, The Trial for Murder, The Signal-man, Four Ghost Stories, The Portrait-Painter's Story, Well-Authenticated Rappings
