  WILLIAM BECKFORD
b.1760 d.1844
Beckford's Vathek (1786) is a classic of English literature , almost as famous as the 300ft tower that he built at Fonthill Abbey, which subsequently collapsed.

Novel
An Arabian Tale from an Unpublished Manuscript, With Notes Critical and Explanatory, J. Johnson (London) 1786 (anonymous)
(An Arabian Tale . . . was the original title of Vathek, written in French by Beckford and translated into English by Samuel Henley. The original manuscript was lost or destroyed, and so Beckford hired a French scholar to re-translate Henley's English back into French. It is usually published as Vathek, or The History of the Caliph Vathek)

The Episodes of Vathek, Stephen Swift (London), 1912
(Vathek was published by Henley before these four episodes were ready. Includes: "The Story of Prince Alasi and the Princess Firouzkah", "The Story of Prince Barkiarokh", "The Story of the Princess Zulkais and the Prince Kalilah")
