Beckford's
Vathek
(1786) is a
classic of English literature , almost as famous as the 300ft
tower that he built at Fonthill Abbey, which subsequently
collapsed.

(An Arabian Tale . . . was the original title of
Vathek, written in French by
Beckford and translated into English by Samuel Henley. The
original manuscript was lost or destroyed, and so Beckford hired a
French scholar to re-translate Henley's English back into French.
