A
wide-ranging and versatile writer, Ackroyd is best known as a
novelist and biographer. His life of T.S. Eliot won the Whitbread
and Heinemann Awards for 1984, and his monumental biography of
Dickens is much acclaimed. The supernatural element in his books
is the wy in which he interweaves past and present, and he is,
perhaps, at his most successful when evoking the past rather than
the present.
