Maurice Denton Welch
(1915-1948) was an English writer and painter, admired
for his his often painfully precise descriptions of
people, objects, places and events. He studied painting
at Goldsmiths' School of Art, London, until a bicycle
accident in 1935 severed his spine and left him
temporarily paralysed and permanently ill. He took up
writing, producing three highly autobiographical books
